After a long meeting last night, the school board has finailized a 2006-2007 budget that avoids some of the painful special education and outdoor education cuts.

The Ottawa Carleton District School Board trustees are debating how to address the more than $32 million deficit they are facing. Since the funding announcements came after many commitments had already been made, it appears that severe cuts in support staff services are imminent.

An information rally, sponsored by OCASC, will take place at the Board office at 133 Greenbank Road on Monday, August 28, 2006 at 5:00 pm. The final budget meeting will take place at 6:30 pm, with a board meeting to approve budget directly afterwards.

The Toronto Star is reporting that the provincial government has assigned a Fact-Finder to review the Toronto School Board's budget proposal that will see the closure of 10 schools and 80 school swimming pools, the elimination of 600 EAs and many other cuts. This has some parallels to the difficult decisions facing the OCDSB as it tries to balance its budget while dealing with French, ESL, Special Ed. and Teacher Salarary costs that are not fully covered by the province's funding formulas.
