Lady Evelyn Alternative School Council

January 2001

Welcome back. We hope you had a good holiday break. The school council is looking forward to the winter skating and gymnastic activities, as well as taking another look at what programmes we can afford based on our fundraising energies. Increasingly, the council is being asked to pitch in to support what were traditionally school board responsibilities. This is, unfortunately, a trickle-down result of provincial funding cut-backs. We encourage those who want to help us prioritize what we should subsidize as a parent council are encouraged to attend our next council meeting. Strap on those skates or grab that sled and lets have a great winter...

Council Meeting

The last council minutes are now available at the council web site (http://www.deadman.ca/le). The next council meeting will be held on Tuesday January 16th, at 7:30 P.M. in the staff room. This meeting will:

Social

Flying Phil will be in the school the week of January 22nd to lead all the classes through some gymnastics. This has been a very popular programme funded by the council for the last several years.

Other upcoming activities include a skating party or skate-a-thon on the canal and our yearly swimming party in April. These will be discussed at the council meeting next week.

Fundraising

The hats and scarves were a great success -- hats off to Sue Hollingsworth for organizing this. The Loblaws gift certificates are an easy and painless way of raising money for the council. The fundraising committee would like to remind parents that they can still get involved. If you are interested, please contact Anne Crawford at 567-0318.

Pizza Lunches will be starting this month on fridays, so we can look forward to one day a week where we don't have to scramble as much in the morning. The kids like them too. Thanks to Petra Brougham for organizing this.

As always, more fundraising volunteers are always needed. If you have an idea or some energy, give Anne Crawford or Sue Hollingsworth (234-2904) a call.

Health and Safety

Sue Hollingsworth has donated a couple of mini-hay bales for the sliding "hill", to avoid possible injuries with kids sliding into the trees on the "crazy carpets".

Lisa Ashley has provided some information sheets on head lice, handwashing and colds vs. flus to the council web site (http://www.deadman.ca/le/health.shtml).

Copies of these documents will also be placed on the bulletin board outside the office.

Yard

Several parents have volunteered to build new schlockey boards to increase the yard activities for the children.

Work is starting on investigating the new upgrades and grants to improve the play quality of our yard for our children. If anyone has any ideas or wants to get involved, please contact Jeff Sutton.

Choir

Both primary and Junior choirs had a fun fall and many parents, staff and students really enjoyed the primary choir's performance at the Holiday Fair.

The Primary Choir would like to remind parents that it will be continuing during the winter months and is always looking for parents to help "corral" the kids during the Thursday Lunch-hour sessions. If you can help, please give the choir-master, Denise Hawkins, a call.

School Closures

In December, the new school board decided to keep open most of the schools previously slated for closure. This means that Lady Evelyn will not be faced with absorbing a Congregated Gifted EFI 5-6 programme. On the other hand, for Lady Evelyn parents with children interested in MFI, Overbrook was not saved, and so the future location of that programme is still unresolved.

Rags and Bones

The Rags and Bones puppet theatre, partly sponsored by your school council, has be rescheduled for this month. Thanks to Valerie, our principal, for spearheading this.
