News
and Reports
School CD
Plans are afoot with both the
Primary and Junior choirs, and other school groups, to produce a Lady Evelyn
CD this year. We hope this will be an interesting memento in years to come,
and may raise a bit of money for the council. Watch for more information
later in May.
New Sign on Main Street
The council, in co-operation
with Rainbow Kidschool, has replaced the sign at the end of the street
with a new sign intended to make Lady Evelyn more visible.
School Directory
Last week you should have received
this year's school directory that will allow you to keep in touch with
your child's friends over the summer. Thanks to Heather Muir and others
for doing the work and pulling this together for us.
Thanks for the Volunteer Tea
Volunteers are an essential
part of Alternative Education, from classroom volunteers, to pizza lunches,
book orders, community breakfasts and all the council work in Education,
social, health, yard, fundraising, finances, etc. A special Thank-You for
the Wonderful "Tea" put on by the staff last week in recognition of our
school's volunteers.
Alta Vista Parkway Meeting
There will be a public meeting
on June 4th at 7:00 P.M. at St. Paul's University about the
Alta Vista Transportation Corridor and its impact on our community. The
proposed Alta Vista Parkway will occupy the large field between Springhurst
Park and the Lees apartment buildings.
Board Budget
The school board has approved
a budget for next year with a $23M deficit, which is of course not allowed
by provincial law. Depending on how the province responds, any number of
things may happen, from the province taking over the school board to new
emergency funding.
Now is the time to make your
voice heard by calling, writing or emailing your MPP. Information and ways
of contacting your MPP or the Minister of Education can be found at:
Co-Chair's
Message
Amazingly
it's June already. I've had a lot of fun working with the staff and other
volunteers this year, as well as the kids. It's quite amazing how many
"enrichment" events have come into the school this year, from "Blues in
the School" to the NAC performances, the Pierre Vaillancourt quartet and
Mad Science to hand-on things such as "The Whale". In addition, the Primary
and Junior Choir have been active as has the lunch-hour sports programmes.
I've barely even scratched the surface.
This
is truly what Alternative Education is all about. Getting the best out
of our kids not through pressure but by giving the kids an exciting and
stimulating environment and the freedom to explore. Alternative Education
may not be about competition, but it is most certainly about excellence.
I
hope everyone has a fun and exciting summer full of discovery. Kind of
like a two-month field-trip.
Cheers,
