School Council Meeting Oct 23,06

 

Attended by Richard Deadman, Dominic Fontaine, Teresa LeGrand, Annette Hegel, Shahla, Charlene Poon, Robin McLellan, John Omura, Clode Deschamps, Lori Lovett and Sherry-Lynn Page

 

·         Clode is the new teacher representative as Geoff is on parental leave

·         Clode suggested The Little Prince by Saint Exupery books for juniors as a novel study

·         Discussed that students could purchase books for study and tie the book in with an outing to see the play The Little Prince

·         Clode to discuss further with Lori/to look into distributors and discounts if buying in bulk as French texts more costly

·         Arts-literary and listening centres required

·         The cost for one centre is $300

·         School Council requesting itemized list of activities with monetary amounts and list also prioritized from Clode

·         Workshops are better than all of student body being in the gym so any money for arts would be appreciated

·         Blues in the School-Lori’s opinion for every other year

·         Feedback-the blues education was a bit over the heads of the primary students and more music than education would have been better

·         Feedback was given to Blues and the organizers work with education details and stressed the education portion

·         Students really enjoyed the hip hop

·         Skating lessons suggested for primary students

·         Sandy Hill Arena-skating free during the day and would be great for grade 1-3

·         Sherry Lynn to contact Ottawa Skate Club

·         Helmets donations needed and $100 would be good to get inventory

·         Swimming – YMCA had wanted $2600 so students now swimming at Ottawa U

·         Skating-something to look into would be contacting Ottawa U’s physical education department- Gee Gee’s-hoping that someone will want to donate time

·         Flying Phil was mentioned- no decision

·         Lori has a friend who fences- an idea

·         Jen Dawson would like more dancing

·         Teachers to prioritize list of arts and sports

·         Couple hundred dollars for balls and skipping ropes

·         Someone had asked about equipment in health room-for 20 minute minimum physical activity to get kids moving-to use in hallways

·         Playground items-we need to establish a routine that will get everything back inside after recess

·         Feb-Teacher Appreciation

·         Parents were concerned about why raising money for computer lab-explained

·         Lori has asked the Board about wireless as may cost less

·         Annette building resource library

·         Talking to Ottawa Library-Grant Alternative

·         Outreach resources for ethnic students

·         Bringing in parents with language barriers

·         Cooperative Games Night an idea

·         Education Night went well-about 90 people

·         Some came in after dinner and more structure required next time and games for babysitters

·         Julia Sneyd has made suggestion of glass plates

·         Annette/Education Com given $750

·         Sherry Lynn/Social Com given $250

·         Shahla/ Fundraising Chair-Senators ticket sales orders-forms will be sent out this Friday-game dates are on weekends-deadline Nov 10th

·         Nora Ballantyne-lead on berry sale

·         Family Dance-magician-Chris-magic and music-Feb 8th

·         Corporate letter for donations for computer lab-Lori to look into
