Lady Evelyn Alternative School Council

Lady Evelyn is the first alternative school in Ottawa--a school that exists because parents actively sought to create a school that reflected their ideas about the kind of education they wanted for their children. So, even before there was a school, there was a very active ‘parent council’.

The parent council has become the school council, and now includes staff and community representation. Just how this council works from year-to-year depends to some degree upon the parents involved and what they make of it. Some parents participate directly on the council by taking on one of the key jobs that must be done to allow the council to operate effectively. This is one way that parents who cannot volunteer during the day can contribute to the school. Many others participate by volunteering to help out with council-sponsored fundraisers and school events.

As an alternative school, Lady Evelyn welcomes and expects high levels of parent participation. All parents who are able to should spend some time in their children’s classrooms, and helping out with field trips and special projects. A ‘volunteer form’ is sent home by the council at the beginning of each school year so parents can indicate how they would like to contribute. Every parent is welcome to speak to their child’s teacher, or someone from the council, if you want to become more involved.

At council meetings and events, everyone who wants to participate is welcome. Every parent who attends a council meeting has a voice. All parents are invited to come out to the council’s regular meetings to help decide what the council’s priorities should be, how we should raise funds to benefit our school and how to spend them, and to address your concerns, hopes and dreams for your children’s education.
